Read by Jina Oh. Winner of the 2002 Printz Award for young adult literature, this first-person present-tense novel, which follows a young girl's maturation from an ingenuous Korean child to a Korean-American teenager, presents an interesting vocal challenge. Changes in age are always tricky, and the gradual mastery of a new language adds to the complexity, but narrator Jina Oh captures both admirably. The voices of the secondary characters change as well-the weary acceptance of Young Ju's mother hardens into resolve, her father's inner rage swells to a crescendo, and her brother shifts from pesky companion to surly stranger. Especially convincing is the portrait of Young Ju as she takes the final step out of childhood and picks up the phone to report her father's abuse. From HORN BOOK, (c) Copyright 2010.
