PreS-Gr 3-Arnie was a happy doughnut until he discovered that his new owner had bought him for the purpose of consumption. The horror! Both Arnie and his purchaser try to find a way to solve this problem, and their final answer is, to say the least, unique. This hilarious story, written and illustrated by Laurie Keller (Holt, 2003), has a screwball sense of humor that is sure to delight children. Michael McKean reads the story with expression, while other voices chime in for the clever asides and conversations scattered across the pages like sprinkles on a doughnut. Keller's eccentric acrylic and collage illustrations have been animated, and fun original music has been added. This is more than a reading of the book-it's a production that fully exploits a clever text. The book/tape combination uses the soundtrack from the video, and is just as much fun. This is the sort of imaginative story that both children and adults will enjoy, and this production retains all of its zany humor.-Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA (c) Copyright 2010.
