Zack and his dog, Salty, are sailing from Alaska to Hawaii in a small sailboat when they encounter a fierce storm. Washed overboard, they eventually land safely ashore -- to a warm Hawaiian welcome. The artwork conveys the power and beauty of the storm, sea, and sky with more assurance and originality than it does the emotions and activities of the people and dog. Ages 4^-7. Once again Salty the dog and his master Zack head into adventure, this time sailing from Alaska to Hawaii. As they draw near enough to see the Hawaiian Islands, the radio announces a storm that will prevent them from reaching safe harbor. That night, huge waves sweep them off the sailboat's deck and wash them onto shore, where Salty pulls the unconscious Zack to safety. Later "their new Hawaiian friends" prepare a luau in their honor. Although the last double-page spread looks like a travel poster for a Hawaiian vacation, the other colorful paintings make the most of a dramatic story and original setting. Few dog lovers will be able to resist Salty's portrait on the jacket, and the story will certainly hold children's attention. A satisfying adventure for fans of Salty Dog (1989) and Salty Sails North (1990). --Carolyn Phelan

K-Gr 2ÂZack and his adventurous dog, introduced in Salty Dog (1991), Salty Sails North (1992), and Salty Takes Off (1991, all Holt), are sailing in a small boat from Alaska to Hawaii, when both are washed overboard by an unexpected storm just before reaching their destination. Salty pulls the unconscious man ashore where his heroism is celebrated with a true Hawaiian luau. This nautical adventure centers mainly on sailing procedures, the ferocity of the storm, and the camaraderie between the captain and his canine first mate. Rand's large, realistic watercolors with unusual perspectives expand the simple plot. An exciting and satisfying story for seafarers and landlubbers alike.ÂClaudia Cooper, Ft.
