Gr. 6-8. April and her mother, who recently divorced April's TV journalist father, come home to the top floor of a brownstone. April's cousin, Darcy, and her family live downstairs. These companion volumes describe April's adjustment to her new situation as well as Darcy's problems trying to hang on to her friends while developing a relationship with her cousin. April Upstairs has a rather confusing beginning, but once readers become familiar with who's who and know that April and Darcy go to different schools, they should enjoy the book and move easily on to the next one. Light fare with a nice twist. ~--Ilene Cooper

Gr 5-8-- A companion novel to Darcy Downstairs (Holt, 1990), this book is not up to Pfeffer's usual commendable standards. Readers find April Hughes apprehensive upon entering an exclusive all-girls school. In an effort to meet new people, she signs up for the school paper; through a chain of events, she finds more ``best friends'' than she can handle. A plethora of additional characters--flamboyant Darcy, April's foreign-correspondent father, and a bizarre set of twins--detract from April's development and adjustment to her new environment. Pfeffer does not present anything new on middle-school relationships, although the setting and some plot lines are realistic. Libraries seeking something special will find this a disappointing venture. --Jana R. Fine, Clearwater Public Library System, FL (c) Copyright 2010.
